Girl Scout Troop 901

Girl Scout Troop 901

Thanks for visiting our site. We are a group of Girl Scouts who have been together in this troop since we were Daisies, the kindergarten level of Girl Scouts. We enjoy helping people, animals, the community, and the environment. We also love learning new skills: metalworking, sewing, first aid, camping, tile art, woodworking, cooking, baking, boating, pottery, and more. We are now at the level of Girl Scout Cadettes, which is the level for girls in grades 6, 7, and 8.

Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards in Girl Scouts

In Girl Scouts, there are three big awards. These are not required but are an option for Girl Scouts who want to earn these awards.

The first is the Bronze Award, done with one girl or more, even a whole troop. The girls work together to come up with the idea for the project and do it. Each girl in the project must work at least 20 hours.

The next one is the Silver Award, and that is the one that we are working on right now. For that award, one to four girls work together. We are a group of four. Each girl in the project must work at least 50 hours. Only about 10% of Girl Scouts earn this award, and we are very proud to work together on this project.

The last one is the Gold Award, which Girl Scouts do independently. It is a big project. The girl comes up with the idea for the project, makes her own proposal, recruits volunteers, and gets it done. Only 5% of Girl Scouts earn this award.

A part of each project is to think about how it will last into the future. It is called the sustainability of the project. That is why we are building a website that will stay up and help raise people’s awareness about the threatened and endangered animals in Florida.

We are excited about more projects that we will continue to do.

BRONZE AWARD

CAMP WAI LANI PLAYGROUND

Bronze 6
Bronze 5

We built a playground at Girl Scout Camp Wai Lani out of all recycled materials. We used discarded tires which was good because 52% of discarded tires get burned for fuel. Burning a single tire can produce over two gallons of toxins. We also used an old leaky canoe. We also created a sign about taking care of the planet.

PARK PRESERVATION

BAYVIEW PARK CLEAN UP & MAINTENANCE

Bayview Park is a park in Clearwater Florida just off Gulf to Bay Boulevard right before you get on the Courtney Campbell Causeway. We have been working for over 3 years to clean up the park and surrounding areas. Additionally we have removed a lot of Caesar Weed, an invasive species of plant that suffocates native plants.

SAVING OUR SHORELINE

PLANTING MANGROVES PROJECT

Mangroves Feb 2022
Mangroves

Mangroves provide natural infrastructure to protect shorelines from extreme weather by protecting the soil and preventing erosion. They also provide an important habitat for fish, shrimp, molluscs and crabs. Working with the non-profit Keep Pinellas Beautiful we planted mangrove trees along the shore line near Bayview Park.

DISCOVERING PERMACULTURE

LEARNING ABOUT BETTER WAYS TO FARM

We visited a local Permaculture Farm to learn about the value of creating sustainable and self-sufficient agriculture. We saw foxes, spiders and birds. It was good for the animals and there was not a lot of pollution there. The owner of the farm showed us how different plants work together and make it so you don’t need chemicals and pesticides to help the plants grow and survive.

GIRL SCOUT BREATHE JOURNEY

TRANSPLANTING FLORIDA LONGLEAF PINE TREES

Breathe Journey Tree Planting 3
Breathe Journey Tree Planting 1

In 2022, our Troop did the Girl Scout Breathe Journey. Our Take Action project was transplanting longleaf pine trees. The longleaf pine is an endangered Florida tree. The longleaf pine and other pines used to cover 90% of Florida forests. When people settled in Florida, the wild fires that were essential to the life cycle of the pines were disrupted. Today, longleaf pines have been reduced to 10% of their original coverage and oak has largely replaced them.
